Question Description

Week 3 – Discussion 1

Argumentative Writing [WLO: 1] [CLOs: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 7, Chapter 8, and Chapter 12 from your textbook; the Week 3 Weekly Lecture, the article The Challenge of Exceptional Communication; and the Ashford Writing Center web page for Argumentative Writing (Links to an external site.).

Review the writing techniques on the Argumentative Writing (Links to an external site.) page and, using a minimum of one scholarly source from the library, write a two to three paragraph (150 to 200 words) persuasive statement explaining why your university is a good place to earn an education. Consider your audience as other adult learners and prospective adult learners. You can choose to craft a statement useful to all prospective students, focus on an academic discipline, or another important aspect of your college experience. Make sure your introductory comments clearly identify your target audience.

Guided Response: Review several of your peers’ posts, responding to at least three of them by Day 7. Respond substantively to at least three classmates throughout the week. Address the following in your post:

  • Identify at least one area where their persuasive message may be improved.
    • Describe how you would convince your classmates professionally and effectively to consider your suggestion.
  • Include a minimum of one scholarly and/or credible source in your reply that defends your position.

(I will send to you, once it is available)

Week 3 – Discussion 2

Visual Design [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 1, 4, 5, 6]

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, review Chapter 7 and Chapter 8 from your textbook and the Week 3 Weekly Lecture.

Write about an example of communication that could be improved by applying the visual design principles you read about this week. The communication can be any medium—a web page, a magazine ad, a promotional email, an illustration from a report, etcetera—as long as you can display it in the discussion forum. To attach a file to the discussion forum, select the “Attach” button in the bottom left-hand corner when creating a discussion response. (You can send the file to me and I will attach it)

In your post, identify the visual weaknesses and describe ways to fix them. Explain why the message is not as effective as it could be and how your suggestions would make it more effective.

Week 3 Assignment:

Video Cover Letter

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9, and Chapter 18 from your textbook; the web page Resume, CV, and Cover Letter Development (Links to an external site.); the document Cover Letters (Links to an external site.), and the Week 3 Weekly Lecture.

For this assignment, you will develop a two- to three-minute video that serves as a cover letter for a potential employer. This is a video and you are required to be on camera. Like a written cover letter, this video should be presented professionally and convincingly. Please be sure to wear appropriate clothing, good lighting, and slow and clear language and tone.

To complete this assignment, you may use the native video tool in your classroom. You will click on the “Submit Assignment” button in the top right-hand corner then select the “Record/Upload Media” button to record or attach your video file.

Important note: All submissions require the video uploaded to the classroom. Submitting a link to a video does not fulfill the submission requirements.

In your video,

  • Outline why an employer should consider reviewing your résumé. (Let’s use Organizational Development as the position)
  • Identify specific skills you possess that align with the position this cover letter has been prepared for.

(I will record and upload the video. Can you provide the verbiage for me to record?)
