1. Watch the two films and two youtube clips (all available on e-reserve for our course).

2. Consider the questions posed in the Online Engagement #3 document provided in the Online Engagement folder under the Assignments tab on our Bb site.

3. Engage in an academic debate regarding 1) advantages/disadvantages of cochlear implants, and 2) the impact of this technology on Deaf culture (can you move beyond your own cultural lens?).

this is what needs done but this is where you find the two youtube clips and the #3 document. I am not sure if you can find the film sound and fury: six years later or the film Sound and Fury The Communication Wars of the Deaf but I can give them to you because there in my school account. I can also give you the case of artinian family once someone can help me thanks.

Case of Artinian Family

  • Preparation:
    • You will need to have read and reflected on the relevant material in Chapter 11, additional readings on Bb related to hearing, and material provided in lecture and case on hearing loss.
    • You will need to have read and reflected upon the one-page preparation document Sound and Fury – Case of the Artinian Family that is available below these directions.
    • You will need to have watched the film Sound and Fury available on electronic reserve.
    • You will need to have watched the film Sound and Fury: 6 Years Later available on electronic reserve.
    • You will need to have listened to simulations (voice and music) of cochlear implants:www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpKKYBkJ9Hw or electronic reserve.
    • You will need to have watched the TED Talk at Georgetown by Heather Artinian: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhm5OaXJVMQ or electronic reserve.
  • Online discussion:Participate in an online debate on 1) what is involved in cochlear implants, and 2) what is the impact of this technology on Deaf culture:
  • Which members of the Artinian family were in the right or in the wrong?
  • Should Heather have received a cochlear implant at a young age?
  • If we look beyond “the Heather world”, which world is Heather actually operating out of and what are the implications for her family?
  • What are the thoughts of the Deaf community?Can you get beyond your own cultural lens on this issue?Can you think of deafness as being a difference instead of a disorder?You have read about other cultures this semester from a heavily ethnic perspective; how might you apply that material to Deaf culture?
  • In order to be considered for credit, you must submit a minimum of 3 substantive (meaningful, having substance) comments that each show evidence of:
    • having read and watched all the material in this unit
    • using critical thinking skills to delve deeply into all aspects of this topic, and
    • raising interesting questions for further reflection.
