Originally, it was a small discount store but has grown incredibly to become an organization that runs a chain of grocery stores, discount department stores, and hypermarkets. Currently, Walmart is the largest company by revenue in the globe. The main products provided by Walmart comprise of conventional household goods that can be found in supermarkets and groceries. The main services provided by Walmart include money services such as payment methods and in-store money services, and product services such as installation and cleaning services.

An information system used by Walmart is called Data Café (Collaborative Analytics Facilities for Enterprise). This is an analytics hub located at the organization’s Arkansas headquarters. Data Café Usage

Data cafe system is typically the medium that Walmart uses to store and organize information. This information can be anything from customers’ records to their buying patterns. Everything from managing cost to managing schedules to customer data is compiled into useful information (Baglieri & Iacono, 2018). How and where this information is kept up and up to date for everyone that needs it would be the system.

Data cafe system is basically composed in three tiers. One, the UI or interface through which actors (people) will interact with the system. Two, the computational part that computes the answers or prepare the information to be given as per the query and lastly. Three, the knowledge part, this is the part where knowledge or true information is stored so that user queries can be answered. An information system is software that helps you organize and analyze data.

If Walmart was a person, Data café will be the nerves. Data café is Walmart memory as it keep the information stored in a somehow structured manner. It is the nerves as it keep this information flowing between different parts of the organization. If you consider a value chain with all the different parts of the organization interacting to create value, Data café is the glue between those different parts.

Data cafe can handle, oversee and monitor several transactions to figure out which one is of higher need than the other. It can as well can handle business decision making to keep up with the wellbeing and steadiness of those associated with the activity, as it can help others. It also make the operational task of a given organization automated. Walmart is able to save a huge amount of cash, in labor since this system naturally accomplish the work for other people.

For example during sales, customers can easily pay with their visa cards removing the need of physical money. It is the integration of Data café with the banking system that customers are able to do this. Integration of this system with human resource system helps Walmart in tacking employees’ performance as well as weaknesses. With this information management can reward competitive employee and do way with the less competitive ones.

Data Café Strategic Role at Walmart

Data café process all information retrieved from sales activities helping the management in making critical decision pertaining sales. Costumer preferences, customer demand, customer demographic, customer willingness to pay makes a list of the most critical customer data any organization needs to boost their sales. Processing this data for easy visualization helps Walmart in understanding where their customers resides, their product of choice as well as what they need the most.

On top of that, it helps them understand where they make the highest as well as lowest sales. Using this information to make critical decisions, Walmart management is able to maintain their sales by heavily investing in key geographical area or investing on geographical location with low sales where business can growth further. Data cafe provides Walmart with information needed to identify their weak areas, with this information, they can boost productivity, streamline various business processes, and make informed decisions. This information help Walmart better understand their clients. This system also provide necessary resources needed in promoting and selling products. Data Café is truly valuable in all aspects of Walmart business functionality (i.e. operations, advertising, and finance, accounting as well as human resource).

Its main function is to enhance business operations and gather information for decision making from top management to lower management. With Data café, Walmart sales department can further develop their business operations and decision making, this gives the company a competitive advantage. Every employee in Walmart is a user of Data café system. Employees operate at all level in the hierarchy. Users include clerks, supervisors, executives as well as managers. All this users has a role to play in Walmart operations management.

Risk management is of vital importance in this system because of the intellectual and intelligence assets it contains is usually worth far more to an independent, company and Multinational Corporation than all of the computer hardware devices and servers which contain it. That is why that information data is regularly and frequently backed up and deposited in secure storage (Stair & Reynolds, 2019). Risk management corresponds to all the measures that help organizations to ensure security measures beforehand to mitigate risks and threats.

The digital world is prone to several cyber attacks that compromise the data of millions of people all around the world. Information security is a regulatory authority as well as a mandate for organizations to keep their customers and organizational data secure from any third party access. Any discrepancy leads to severe circumstances for the organizations in the form of regulatory fines and penalties.

How Data Café Improve Walmart Process Quality

One of the most important way that Data café improve Walmart process quality is in the ability to share information quickly and easily. The best solution for any organization is going to be performing an audit on business processes and examining the available technology to address any holes in efficiency. What tends to stand in the way is employee buy in. In my aforementioned example three or four people spent more than half of their entire work week copying information (Baglieri & Iacono, 2018). Once an alternative is presented you need to assure them that there is still plenty of work to do, or process changes need to be mandatory from the top down. One person can enter all that data in, and automated reporting can print out anything you need it to once you have everything in a database.

Another important way that Data cafe improve process quality is simply in providing visibility to decision makers in an organization. If the guy or guys at the top have no idea what is really happening then they don’t know what the next move should be or how they might make up for drops in efficiency or the bottom line. Information systems are the nervous system of any good company because they ensure that there are eyes on all of the processes, tasks, documents, and work done (or not done) through a quality business intelligence implementation.

Integrating an information system necessitates the use of costly software, hardware, and human resources. Rental, purchase, and support of software, hardware, and certain other services should be available. Employees who are unfamiliar with new information technology and software must be trained.

The digital world is vulnerable to a wide range of cyber-attacks, which could jeopardize the personal information of millions of people around the world. According to the Federal Trade Commission, information security is both a regulatory requirement and a mandate for businesses to protect their customers’ and organizational data from unauthorized third-party access (Grover et al., 2018). Identity thieves and hackers obtain personal information, whereas corporate saboteurs target sensitive company data. For example, hackers recently targeted several retail chains, stealing customer data from their computer systems and disseminating Social Security and credit card numbers across the Internet.

Walmart typically stores and organizes data using a data cafe system; this is the medium through which they do so. This information could include details about a customer’s previous transactions or purchasing habits. Everything from cost management to scheduling to customer data is compiled into helpful information that can be shared (Baglieri & Iacono, 2018). The system would be in charge of keeping this information up to date and making it available to anyone who needs it.

The fundamental structure of a data cafe system consists of three levels. The user interface, or UI, is the most critical component because it is how actors interact with the system. The computational section generates the answers or prepares the data returned in response to the query, followed by the presentation section—finally, the system’s knowledge component stores knowledge or accurate information to respond to user inquiries. Data Café would be Walmart’s nervous system if it were a person (Baglieri & Iacono, 2018). The data café acts as Walmart’s memory, storing all of the company’s data systematically.
