Summary of article (describe the key points including where the event occurred; be specific)

A global movement for climate change, backed by Greta Thunberg, organized protests against climate change and for awareness of this phenomenon all over the world on Friday. From Europe to Australia, students skipped their schools and workers walked off their job in order to demand better attitude towards the issues pertaining to climate change and environmental degradation. In Sydney people raised placard with signs such as “You’re Burning our Future” and “There Is No Planet B.” In Poland alone, more than 60 protests were carried out. Also, in Berlin many protestors gathered outside landmark Brandenburg Gate. Thousands have been marching in cities like Paris, London, Brussels, Warsaw, New York, Toronto, etc. With protests in more than 150 countries, the participants of the movement for climate change want governments to cut subsidies for fossil fuels, and run the national economies on renewable energy resources. The movement has been popular in Europe where the issue is a top political priority. It is being seen as a serious issue by 93% of the Europeans. The timing of the protests is important because they are held right before the United Nations meetings, including the first Youth Climate Summit on Saturday and the Climate Action Summit of government, corporate and other leaders on 23rd September. The campaign has also encouraged some businesses to take environmental friendly steps. Employees from Google, Amazon and Microsoft are also joining the protests. For example, Volkswagen AG promised to produce more electric cars and become climate-neutral by 2050. Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos also vowed to end fossil fuels dependency by 2030. He announced an organization, the Climate Pledge, after facing criticism over Amazon’s dependence on fossil fuels. Alphabet inc. CEO Sundar Pichai told that Google is buying 1.6 gigawatts of wind and solar power. High-profile business leaders like Mike Cannon-Brookes are backing the campaign as well. Despite high support in Europe, which has suffered from bouts of droughts and wildfires, many far-right organizations like Germany’s AfD party are opposing the movement.

The event is connected to the course because it shows how important public awareness regarding climate change is for our survival. Our objectives and chapters talk in detail about how climate change is detrimental for the planet. These global protests go on to reveal that thousands and thousands of people are realizing that climate change is not good for us and is, therefore, unacceptable.

I am personally interested in this event because (complete this sentence with a short, descriptive paragraph that describes your personal connection to this event)

I am personally interested in this event because I feel that everyone should be cognizant of the pernicious effects of climate change. Moreover, the movement is being led by young people like Greta Thunberg, which shows that how important environmental sustainability is for my generation. We need the older generations to understand that we would not be able to survive in the type world that they leaving behind through their actions. Furthermore, we want our governments to understand that it is their duty to protect the planet for the future generations as well. Lastly, since the movement is being led by young people, it is good to know that our future leaders are concerned about the issues that matter e.g. Climate Change.
