Question Description

In week three we will gain some experience creating new research questions and setting up a hypothetical research proposal. This will help us prepare to complete our mini-studies beginning in week #4.

The purpose of this assignment is to assess your understanding of some key research ideas:

  • Reliability
  • Validity
  • Operationalization
  • Measurement
  • Selecting the proper research design for your research question

The resources provided in the week #3 module include additional details on how to make these design decisions. Please prepare a short (one paragraph) response for each of the following:

  1. What is your research question?
    1. What is the relevance of your research question?
      1. Hint-try to address a gap in understanding you have identified in conducting your literature review
    2. Select a research method for your proposed study. Why is this the appropriate research design for your study?
      1. What would be the implication of choosing a different research method?
    3. How will you operationalize the variables (independent and dependent) of interest in your study?
      1. Please keep in mind that operationalization means defining your terms in a manner that is concrete and measurable. This can be a challenge with abstract variables but is necessary to provide scientific evidence of the phenomenon you are trying to study.
    4. How do you plan to measure your variables? Are there any existing tools or instruments that practitioners use to measure your variables of interest?
    5. How would you establish reliability for your study? The options include test-retest reliability, internal consistency, or inter-rater reliability. (Your choice will depend on the design you have selected for your study).
    6. How would you establish validity for your study? Some terms include content validity, construct validity, face validity, and others discussed in our resources provided in the week #2 module.

Try to keep in mind that validity is accuracy of measurement. Connecting your proposed measurements to what you know about your variables through your literature review and defining terms this way is a great way to establish validity.
